Rachel Pearce BA PGCE

Rachel grew up in Shildon, County Durham; on leaving school she studied General Art and Design at Cleveland College of Art and Design, before specialising in graphic design and illustration at the University of Brighton, graduating in 1994.

Following graduation she spent several years working as a freelance illustrator and part time tutor at Brighton City College and running art, craft and photography workshops with children and adults experiencing mental health and learning difficulties. She now works as a full-time painter and illustrator from her studio at her home in Brighton.

As an illustrator she has among her clients Bloomsbury Publishing, Penguin and Oxford University Press. In 2005 she was selected for a showcase of contemporary British illustration, by the Association of Illustrators, and for their collaborative exhibition, at The Mall Galleries in London.

Her most recent solo exhibition of 40, bold and evocative floral paintings was held at The McGuiness in Durham. Here Rachel demonstrated her fascination with flowers, especially their symbolic value in conveying a wide range of meanings, from love and fertility, to the fragility of life. Also portraits, and landscapes of the South Downs and County Durham.

As a young female artist Rachel enjoys continuing regognition for her work in both Botanical and Portait Painting. Recently she was invited to exhibit with The Society of Botanical Artists in their annual exhibtion in Westminster. And was selected to exhibit some of her portraits - made during her travels in Ethiopia - with The Society of Women Artists at The Mall Gallery in London.
