GUIDE TO TAKING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS
If you dont already have photographs, which you can send me, and you want to take your own, here are a few pointers to get the best results.
1. Consider the pose
If you would like the sitter to be portrayed as doing a particular action then mainly take photographs of this action. You can then annotate the ones that you feel best portray the sitters personality.
Take your photographs at the sitters eye level around a meter away from the sitter to avoid distortion.
2. Lighting
Take your photographs without a flash and ideally in natural light.
Keep the light source slightly to the side of the sitter. This will help to create a gentle contrast and give depth.
If you are outside avoid having the sun behind your subject and avoid taking your picture directly into the sun.
If you wish for me to work from several photographs it helps if the light is from the same direction in all the photographs.
A few flash photographs will be helpful with detailing.
3. Take several photographs
If you are not sure which photographs to choose I will be happy to advise.
I can work from a single photograph, or draw together the best elements from several. This is helpful particularly when you want more than one person in your picture and its difficult to schedule everyone being together at once, or if you are taking photographs of young children or animals.
Whether or not you would like me to work from a single photograph or several, it is helpful to have a few additional pictures in order for me to get an understanding of the sitters personality and features.
